[ it isn't but a few minutes before she's out the door and on her way to les beans. it's a familiar path, one she can cross in no time at all when she needs to. but her pace is a little more leisurely, giving him time to finish anything he might be doing and make his way there as well.

once she's there, she lingers outside a moment or two, looking through the windows of the shop. but the place is deep, and people in the front obscure any in the back. so in she goes. and he's not kidding about being easy to spot.

fixing a smile on her face, she walks over. ]

You must be him.

Him is me!

[He grins up at her. Oooh, she's hot! Who's self-conscious? Not him! Okay... yeah, it's him. Wade holds out a scarred hand up to her from his spot seated at the table.]

I'm Wade Wilson. Or Deadpool. Take your pick.

[ she takes his hand, giving a easy, comfortable shake. though his name gives her pause. ]

Wade... Wilson?

[ it has to be coincidence that his name sounds like slade wilson, right? wilson is a common last name. it's just funny that they rhyme. it's probably just the multiverse acting like... well. the multiverse.

she takes the other seat at the table. ]

I'm Caitlin Snow. Which... you already knew. Sorry. Habits, you know?

That is what I said. Why...? You think I said someone else? Because that would be ridiculous! There's no one like me! I'm not plagiarizing anybody, dammit!

[He suddenly looks really angry at some unspoken accusation, but he quickly settles down as soon as it had come.]

Of course, habits. And what would we be without our manners? [Wade proceeds to shove a croissant he's ordered while he was waiting into his mouth nearly whole and talking while he chews with puffed-out chipmunk cheeks.] F-Fucking animals, that's wut!

[ the sudden outburst of anger makes her lean back, unconsciously wanting to put a little distance there. plagiarizing? how can someone be plagiarizing with a name? and from different universes? that's weird. weirder than what she normally encounters here. but not weird enough to entirely put her off.

he settles, and her posture relaxes again. caitlin watches him jam the croissant in his mouth, and that earns him a short bark of laughter. ]

I suppose so. Though I think manners would have something to say about the, uh. [ she gestures around her own mouth. ] 'See food' you've got going on there.

Wut ab-bout ut? [Wade asks, while still chewing and also trying to talk. He keeps chewing and then finally swallows.]

So! I believe you were promised a retelling of my sad origin story?

[ she can't even give him a decent answer to him questioning her manners comment. she just dissolves into laughter, finally pulling herself together when he swallows.

cait clears her throat. ]

I was! Although, if it bothers you to retell it, we could skip it?

I'm used to it. I've told so many people here already, what's one more?

[Wade is far from one to keep his past hidden. He overshares. And that's his coping mechanism, pretending like it doesn't matter. Everything's a joke, you see.]

I got cancer. It spread rapidly. No treatment worked. Chemo. Clean eating. Herbalife, Witchdoctors, Acupuncture, wishful thinking? Nada. Then this shadowy organization promised me a cure and superpowers. At first, I told them to fuck themselves. Then I got really desperate. Figured I was going to die anyway, why not take a shot?

Didn't go great. Turned out they were just looking for expendable lab rats.

[ oh. oh. as he talks, her expression sobers up completely. what he describes it a total nightmare. and it's a nightmare that she's somewhat familiar with. her father may not have had cancer, but his als had come on fast and didn't let up off the gas. she was young, but she can remember everything her parents did to try and slow it.

and she knows now the lengths he went to cure himself. and to fix her. ]

When you don't feel like you have anything left to lose, you take the risks. They don't always pan out. So what was this, genetic experimentation?

Sort of. My world has something called mutants? People born with a gene that gives them powers. The X-gene. They figured out that sometimes those that don't have apparent powers but may have a latent gene... if you torture them enough that gene might finally express itself. And if those powers did come they planned to slap a collar on me and make me a super-soldier slave to sell off the highest bidder.

[He sips his coffee, taking a moment to collect himself.]

They drowned me, burned me, beat me, cut me, anything you can think of they tried. For months. Then finally... they deprived me of oxygen to the point of death over and over and left me there, put me in a tube, and left me.

But I got hold of a match. Mostly I just intended to blow myself up and get it over with. But at the same time that match lit, my powers made their presence known.
